Hi Michael,
A gardener moving to Marfa is the best news to me! I have gardened in California, New York and West Texas. Good gardening principles are the same everywhere. Our high desert grassland climate does present some specific challenges. We only have 10 inches of rain a year, so it is important to catch every drop and channel it to your plantings. I love gardening all four seasons here. With sunny days and cold nights, the cold hardy vegetables produce during the winter.
Let me recommend some books. Howard Garrett, also known as The Dirt Doctor, has written several books that I refer to often. I also subscribe to his newsletter, which has timely information.
In my posts at this site, you will find pieces on how to garden and harvest rainwater.
Good luck with your research.
Sandra

Hi Sandra, I am an artist and am planning to move to Marfa. I have wanted to live there since the '80s but my art has kept me in Florida. But now I am planning to relocate. One thing I love as much as art is vegetable gardening and I am hoping you can tell me something about gardening in Marfa. Do veg gardens do well there? Perhaps there are literature/resources you can direct me to on the subject of gardening in Marfa. I would appreciate so much, thank you, MV

Thanks for sharing a common love.
Keep beekeeping! There are not enough of you.
How did you learn about beekeeping?
Where does your bee passion come from?
And where are your bees?
Do you sell honey?
So many questions.

A very informative article, I enjoyed it very much. We live on Terlingua Ranch in one of the better areas for the Strawberry Cactus but it is very difficult to beat the critters to the ripe fruit! Patty is a wizard around plants, you were lucky to be on a field trip with her as a guide.
                                                                       Thanks, Terry

Hi
I would like to know if anyone can come and sell goodies and crafts at your farm stand? I attended grade school in Marfa in the early 60's and my grandparents were pioneers of the Big Bend/Presidio Co. I am a decendent of the William E. Russell family. My mother and relatives have land at Casa Piedra which is the actual homestead named for my great grandparents home. I attended college at Sul Ross State Univ. We still have relatives in Marfa and come to visit often. I would like to come and sell some goodies on weekends and during the summer when I am not teaching. Please let me know if I can.
Thank you,
Jackie (Siegel) Oliver
